Performing LaboratoryAdvocate Christ Hospital
Specimen RequirementsSpecimen cannot be drawn offsite.
Specimens must be drawn between the hours of 6:00 am and 3:00 pm Monday-Sunday (excluding holidays) and must arrive within 4 hours of draw.
Container/Tube: 3 Greiner (3.2% sodium citrate) tubes-Hemolyzed specimen is not acceptable.

Collection Instructions: DO NOTcentrifuge. Mix gently by inverting each tube several times. Hand deliver specimen, DO NOT use pneumatic tube system.
Note: 1. Patients who have been treated with glycoprotein IIb/IIIa inhibitor drugs should not be tested until platelet function has recovered. This time period is approximately 14 days after discontinuation of drug administration for acbiximab (ReoPro®) and up to 48 hours for eptifibatide (INTEGRILLIN®) and tirofiban (AGGRASTAT®). The platelet function recovery time varies among individuals and is longer for patients with renal dysfunction.
2. Label tubes as #1, #2, and #3 in order of draw. Label #1 as discard.
Specimen Transport TemperatureAmbient ≤4 hours/Refrigerate NO/Frozen NO
Reference ValuesPresurgical: <20% platelet inhibition
Therapeutic: Higher % platelet inhibition associated with expected antiplatelet effect
